"In celebration of the 55th Annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta, the Jericho Arts Council (JAC) has teamed up with the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce, Golden Artist Colors, regional businesses and artists to create the Bainbridge Arts Trail - "Regatta Row". This year's theme, "Through the Eyes of the Masters" is displayed in an outdoor exhibition of artist designed, Adirondack style "Tilt-top Tables" & "Canoe Paddle Chairs". Each unique piece has canoe paddles incorporated in the design; the table top is 30" square and has three paddles. They will be displayed on Main Street (Intersection of Routes 7 and 206) in historic downtown Bainbridge throughout May and then be auctioned at the Regatta to benefit the Jericho Arts Council. The iconic Canoe Regatta draws close to 15,000 people for Memorial Day Weekend and is the longest flat-water canoe race in the world, culminating at the finish line in Bainbridge.

"Master in Flight"
This is my first year doing this. I was very excited to be accepted to do a Tilt Top Table. Just ask... I hold the record for most emails and questions!
The theme "Through the Eyes of the Masters" brought to mind the eagle and the flag, both being masters of our Wonderful Country.
The small poem on the seat was inspired by thoughts of Bainbridge and the General Clinton Canoe Regatta and Life…

Art Students of Hancock High
Art Teacher: Samantha Spalholz
"MAKIRYN"
The Art Students in Hancock High were challenged to work together on a unique, team design project, Regatta Row – 2017. Inspired by the past participation of their teacher, Bainbridge’s Samantha Spalholz, the Hancock students tapped into their own creativity and artistic passion and did all of the design and execution of “MAKIRYN” (the combined initials of each artist)
In fact, Regatta Row was conceived 5 years ago, after Samantha was invited to exhibit her artistry on statues of Uncle Sam on the streets of Troy, NY. Jericho Arts Council Gallery Committee members attended the opening. That idea kicked off the 3rd annual creation of this exhibit, Regatta Row. Now, the inspiration continues!

"Crew"
My inspiration for "Crew” is a combination of a rowing crew team and a “story time chair
Crew teams win by the perfect timing and synchronization of each athlete rowing together, following the call of the coxswain (many people erroneously call this critical, non-rowing position “the captain”). The Crew Team is a fitting analogy for reading a story together.
Story time chairs take on all different forms. However, what they have in common is an intention to seat more than one person for the enjoyment of reading together or being read to. The story time chairs I like most are those intended for an adult and children to share.
“Crew” has the intention of seating one adult and up to three children (one on each arm-seat and a third in the lap of the already seated adult).
Let’s face it, sometimes reading is best done as a team sport!
After almost 28 years of employment with Golden Artist Colors, Inc, Bill Berthel is now focusing full-time on his professional and personal development coaching business, B2Coaching right here in Bainbridge NY.

"Bainbridge Café at Night"
I've always been fond of Van Gogh's work. Café Terrace at Night and Starry Night are used as inspirations for the table top. It was an interesting challenge to combine the Americana look of downtown Bainbridge and Van Gogh's style. For the seat, I used expressionism to showcase spectators watching the canoe regatta, a modern take on a classic technique.

"Fool Me Twice, Strike Three"
School sports are a big part of a small town. Our mascot, the Bobcat, is the face of all Bainbridge sports and I wanted to portray that with a combination of urban street art. Graffiti is almost “taboo” and yet it all comes together with freedom of expression in the creative process. My style of art goes against the grain of expectation. I hope the viewer experiences a sense of not being afraid of coloring outside the lines and finding a sense of beauty within the chaos.

"Family Memories"
I am so excited to be returning for my second year! This year I selected a table on which I painted a backgammon board. When you flip my chair top up you can enjoy a country scene complete with sunflowers. The sunflowers are embellished with metal studs to enhance the sunflower center. I am a transplanted city person, who embraces country life & family, so I wanted my chair to reflect my love for country & family values. When I think about where my chair belongs, I see it on a porch with family gathered around. What a great opportunity to play a game of backgammon, and when we spend time together, we make memories. So, pull up a chair, play a few games and enjoy life!

"Impressionistic River"
This is my first year painting a chair for the regatta. I was very excited with the theme “ Through the Eyes of the Masters”. The Impressionist master who immediately came to mind was Vincent Van Gogh. I love color and texture and most of my paintings are bright and colorful. Bainbridge sunsets with intense saturated colors inspired my integration of Van Gogh’s style with my own passion for color. The scene is a combination of local beauty and fantasy.

"Night and Day"
This is the first year I have painted a chair for the Regatta Row and probably the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken. I started painting seriously about four years ago and quickly discovered that it was a way to express myself and escape reality all at the same time. My chair draws inspiration from an aspect of the Canoe Regatta that isn’t always a first thought for most people. Whenever I hear “Canoe Regatta”, I think of the carnival and fireworks. The arms depict the departing cars and the finish line of the Regatta! My design is meant to spark childhood nostalgia in those of all ages and allow you to walk down memory lane of your own childhood. I also discovered a way to incorporate glitter into my painting to truly bring out the spirit of the gleaming carnival rides.

"Around the Riverbend"
I am from Bainbridge and it has been a great pleasure to contribute to the community with my art. Art has been my passion for as long as I can remember and my goal is to become a professional artist someday. I graduated from Visual Communications at DCMO BOCES after two years studying design and animation. I have been attending Fine Art courses studying proportion, figure drawings, compound objects and the five value system. Working on this Canoe Paddle Chair gave me an opportunity to share my passion with my community.

"Quiet Beauty"
I was immediately inspired by the theme “Through the Eyes of the Masters.” I love the modern masters, Van Gogh and Picasso and the expression of the real world coming through an emotional journey. Allowing the creative process to be in charge, not the mind, that can over think and dominate ones process. The inspiration for the top of the table was Picassos “The Old Guitarist” from the Blue Period. Of course I wanted it to feel connected to the Regatta and the river and again with the creative process in charge “The Quiet Beauty” was born. Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” seemed a natural choice as again, I wanted it to be connected to what we see here and through the Eyes of a Master.

"Story Hour"
This table/chair is filled with references to regional Native American artifacts that embody the folklore of creation, animals, trees and the natural world.
Elders share the story of Skywoman, who floats out of a hole in the sky that was carved by water birds. She drifts to a Tortoise Island in the center of the river. Skywoman is grandmother to the twins, Flint, who is night and Sky Holder, who is day. They are responsible for creation of the Onondaga Indians and animals.

"Native Paddles"
My Tilt Top Table is functional art interpreting “Through the Eyes of the Masters”-- those indigenous people who lived in Bainbridge many many moons ago. I have chosen to do a Native American inspired chair because before settlers came to the area, the Iroquois were here. Canoes were a large part of Iroquois life. Paddles were embellished with decorative and symbolic designs. I designed the paddles of the chair with images we might have seen on Paddles used long ago. Iroquois art work was bold, colorful and symbolic. I hope my interpretation brings joy toeveryone who sees it and inspires them to look to Masters of the past.

"Bainbridge Settler's Picnic"
My table is based on the game of “Settlers of Caton” with a Bainbridge twist. The resources and setting of our town prompted the choice of a picnic scene. Rock walls, rolling hills, a canoe going downstream, along with butterflies, grasshoppers, ladybugs, ants & dragonflies have become the magnetic playing pieces. Included are all the Bainbridge Settler’s playing pieces in the picnic basket seat. Play the game on the metal checkerboard. Checkers can also be played on this table too!

"The Path to Happiness"
Inspired by Impressionism, the theme “Through the Eyes of the Masters” stylistically evolved into a deeply personal style. The pottery on the arms reflects my passion for creating unique vessels from the earth.
The theme of this chair is a tribute to all of the Artists and Entrepreneurs that have followed their creative path to Bainbridge. Our Town has a wonderful history of having a wide variety of Artists, Craftsmen and Shopkeepers. From Flower Shops ,Antique Stores, Gift Shops. Bed & Breakfast Establishments and Restaurants - all started by individuals with a dream."

"OarAura"
Peacock feathers, for me, are an earthly manifestation of the universe. In the swirls, colors, iridescence and movement, I see the stars, the planets, comets, the milky way and mystery. The eyes of the tail feathers are symbolically connected to the stars, and also to the all seeing cosmos. I feel both earthly and celestial connection. Peacock feathers hold special mystical meaning for many cultures, religions and spiritualities. And in this, the feathers also remind me of a unifying force connecting all earthly and cosmic beings.
